16-year-old El Pasoan off to China for stem-cell procedure
EL PASO — Lawrence E. Brown III, 16, began his journey to China on Saturday for a stem-cell procedure that he hopes will finally give him sight.
Brown was born with optic nerve hypoplasia, an underdevelopment of the nerves in his eyes that left him able to see little more than shadows.
Brown, his mother, Georgina A. Brown, and his sister Emani Brown will spend 40 days in Qingdao, China, for a treatment not available in the U.S. There, Lawrence Brown will receive umbilical stem cells in eight procedures in an effort to stimulate the development of his optic nerves.
